Free Comic Book Day starts Saturday morning when your favorite comic book shop opens May 3, 2008, this year. For those that can't make it out to the one I'm going to be giving out my free comic, I have provided a .pdf version of it here!

It is a targeted to a younger audience, but I still hope it's a fun read. The file is about 3MB to download. If you do download, it would be very much appreciated that you leave a comment, so I kinda know that someone out there is enjoying it.

And comments afterwards are good too.

Have a great weekend!!

I think this cover was kind of a paste-up from different drawings that Jack had. Not a very pleasing wrapper, if you ask me, with the brown background, but knowing that era and the constraints, they were probably under a crunch to get it to the printer. We'll see how close to the book's the finale is in the movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Original cover to Fantastic Four #50 by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott. The end issue #48 revealed the space-god Galactus. This issue starts out right at that point with the fabulous FF stunned by his presence.

Original cover to Fantastic Four #48 by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott. This issue marked the debut of the Silver Surfer the star of the new FF movie, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I guess the filmmakers wanted to avoid any puns so they've done away with "the coming of" anybody. This whole amazing story was published in 1966! It's taken 40 years for them to bring it to the big screen. I know it will be nothing like the comic book, but I'm hoping to enjoy it none-the-less.

The three issue story-arc (FF #48-50) debuts the Silver Surfer, herald of the space-god, Galactus. Galactus, we discover, seeks to drain the life-force of planets, leaving them ravaged, drained of energy. Over the years, rather than keeping with the initial concept of "think of Galactus as a gold miner -- prospecting in space! but, instead of ore, he digs for energy," Galactus' intentions were simplified by writers who either didn't understand the concept, or thought it was just funny to make him "something that eats planets."

Such a shame.

Artwork from MGC#35 by John Buscema and Joe Sinnott. This issue was the reprint of Fantastic Four #48, printed in 1972. I love this Buscema cover depicting how monumental the arrival of the Surfer was.

I will be out at

Pop Culture Comix
9337 W 87th Street
Overland Park, Kansas
11 am - 5 pm

I'm going to be giving away TwoMorrow Publishing's Comics 101: How to & History Lessons from the Pros 2007 to those up-and-coming talents in KC. Show me your work or draw something that I can post on my blog/website and you'll get a free comic that tells you how to make comics! Young or old, if you're interested in being a comic creator or just want to learn more. Come on out! I know I wish I had this book when I was younger! Or even 6 years ago!

I hope everyone interested goes out to their favorite comic book retailer and has a chance to look at not only the FREE stuff, but maybe something that you've heard about or something that you liked as a kid. I'm sure there'll be loads of Spider-man stuff (there's a free Spider-man comic just for this special day) just in time for the movie. I see there's even a free Legion of Super-heroes comic based on the animated t.v. series.

My buddy Bill Hook will be out there as well as Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, authors and co-authors of many Star Trek novels and short stories as well as many other projects.

I hope the weather holds for us.
"Hi, and welcome to Time-Warner Cable. We're excited to tell you about our new digital cable Navigator and all of the reductions in service that Time-Warner Cable is bringing to you for the same amount each month.

"Right off, you'll notice the new monochromatic blue, which is difficult to read and understand your programming guide. Also, the scheduled shows no longer let you know if the show is NEW or if you've already seen it in the past. The type is also much smaller, making way for a huge bar across the side and bottom that is totally useless and ugly, but degrades reading ability.

"Next, you'll find that your new Navigator is much slower in response than the previous version and also only has the current 4 hours of programming available causing you to have to wait for additional download time of the next 4 hours of programming. If you're wanting to schedule things in the morning that will come on later that evening, an additional 4 hour download will let you wait even longer.

"If you'll be away that evening and wish to set more than one show, as you were able to in the past. Forget it. That feature has been totally removed from the new Navigator.

"We hope you enjoy your digital cable system and the new exciting Navigator. And thank you for choosing Time-Warner Cable, the only cable service in your area!"

---

And in 2009 you won't be able to get anything on your antiquated t.v. antenna, so piss off.
